Finishing an Exercise
When you finish an exercise, your
browser uploads your score and other useful information
to the hotpotatoes.net server, so that your teacher
can see it, and download results achieved by you and
the other students in your class. The upload process
is entirely automatic - you do not have to do anything
other than ensure that the browser can connect to the
internet.
Your Internet Connection
The nature of your internet connection
can affect how you use the hotpotatoes.net service,
especially if you are using a metered dialup connection
where you pay more to be online for longer (in other
words, where internet access appears on your telephone
bill as a call charge). If you have a toll-free connection
to the internet, or if you use hotpotatoes.net from
a networked computer in a college, you can ignore this
section.
If you pay by the minute for your
internet connection, and the exercise you are doing
takes a long time, you may want to hang up your connection
while you do the exercise. When you finish the exercise,
your browser should automatically try to connect to
the internet to upload your score - usually this means
that your computer will display a "Connect"
button, which you should click.
If you do not connect and upload your
score, it will not be recorded, and the teacher will
be able to see that you have downloaded an exercise
without submitting a result.
Student Comment
When the results of an exercise are
uploaded, you are given the option to add your own comment
for the teacher:
Time-Out
When your teacher designs an exercise
for the hotpotatoes.net system, s/he can choose whether
or not to set a time-limit for the exercise. If a time
limit is set, and the time limit is reached, the exercise
will finish itself, preventing you from answering any
further questions. It will automatically send to the
server the score you had achieved by the time-out.
